In a surprising move, Ford is scaling back its all-electric F-150 Lightning production by nearly half for 2023, a stark reversal from previous expansion efforts. The new plan outlines an average weekly volume of 1,600 vehicles, down from the intended 3,200.
The decision, aimed at aligning production with customer demand, reflects Ford’s commitment to adapt to the evolving electric vehicle market. Executives emphasize the need to match production with demand while canceling or delaying $12 billion in upcoming EV investments.
A planning memo to suppliers obtained by Automotive News attributes the production cut to “changing market demand.” Despite a six-week capacity increase earlier this year, reaching 150,000 units annually, Ford is recalibrating its strategy as EV demand lags behind expectations.
Sales of the F-150 Lightning hit a monthly record of 4,400 units in November, contributing to a year-to-date total of 20,365—a 54% increase from the previous year. The industry grapples with slower EV demand amid elevated prices and interest rates, prompting automakers to reevaluate production and cost-cutting strategies.
